Program Overview

The goal of the Environmental Resources program at Spokane Regional Health District is to protect public health through the prevention of pollution to land, air and water. Staff achieve this goal by:

  • Regulating solid waste management
  • Overseeing land use requirements
  • Conducting small business inspections for proper hazardous materials handling, with emphasis on enrollment in a reward incentive program
  • Ensuring groundwater-drinking water protection

The work of this program is important as it ensures that the environment in which Spokane County residents live, work and play is protected from practices that have negative impacts on human health.

The program is funded primarily with permit fees, solid waste disposal fees, and grants. The Environmental Resources program works with outside agencies like the Washington State Department of Ecology, Washington State Department of Health, and Spokane County.
