The focus of public health is to prevent rather than treat a disease through surveillance of cases and the promotion of healthy behaviors. Here are 10 examples of public health measures that can help to improve lives in our community.

  1. Wash your hands well and often. Cover your cough, sneeze in your sleeve. More information.
  2. Get vaccinated.  Get screened.  See your doctor regularly. More information.
  3. Conquer your addictions. Avoid tobacco and illegal drug use.  If you drink, don't drive. More information.
  4. Be sexually responsible – avoid disease and unintended pregnancies. More information.
  5. Protect yourself from injury – wear helmets and seatbelts. More information.
  6. Brush and floss daily.  See a dentist regularly.  Use products with fluoride. More information.
  7. Learn how to be a good parent – from pre-birth through early adulthood. More information.
  8. Be physically active.  Exercise 30 minutes a day, 10 minutes at a time, 5 days a week. More information.
  9. Choose a diet high in fruits, vegetables and whole grains, and low in saturated fats.  Handle and cook food properly. More information.
