Nurse-Family Partnership Is Helping Parents Achieve the Future They Want

October 25, 2024

What if we told you we’ve found something that has been shown to improve employment outcome for parents and increase relationship stability with their partner? What if we also told you families love it and don’t have to pay? You might think it sounds too good to be true, but it is true! SRHD has been using the program for decades.

The program is called Nurse-Family Partnership. Just like the name says, the program matches an eligible family with a registered nurse to create a partnership as they plan for their baby, parenting journey, and their future goals. The nurse will support enrolled parents and work with them during pregnancy and until their child reaches age 2.

What makes this program so different from other services? Relationship. Georgie McCrady was the first nurse to begin the program in the 1970s in New York and she was determined that it be a true partnership. As she says, “You have to go in and first listen. And it might not pertain to pregnancy. You can’t just go into someone’s house and act like you know everything.” The parents see the same nurse for every visit, which helps to build trust, and the visit takes place at the family’s home where they feel comfortable. Throughout this process the nurses help parents set goals and feel empowered to make important life decisions.

Who knew taking the time to build relationships with new parents could reduce government costs while helping parents achieve the future they want for themselves? We did! We also want everybody to know! If you are planning to or know someone who is planning to have a baby, check out the website. You can learn more about eligibility, how to refer yourself to the program, and even hear stories from parents who have gone through the program. Health care providers will also find an easy online referral form for their expecting patients.
